Proverbs 2 – The Case for Wisdom – Part II

Click here to read Part I

So, last time we left off with verses 1-4. They showed us the value of wisdom and how to obtain it. They explained to us that God wants to be pursued and will give His gifts, such as wisdom, to those that truly want Him.

Ugh, “want” is such a lame word. It seems so overused. “I want God, I want His glory, I want a sandwich, and I want my chores to be done.” These verses scream at us that “want” is not the answer.

Alright Thesuaruas.com give me an edge here. If we want to find Him we must long for him, crave Him, yearn for Him, thirst for Him, Have a Hankerin’ for him…?? Ok, but you get the point. It goes so far beyond want. God “wanted” you so bad that he became human (that already sucked for the perfect being), and then died, experienced physical and spiritual torture, just to give you the chance to choose Him. He was willing to do all that even though we could still turn from him. Now that is “want”.

Anyway, I think that was summed up. Let’s move on to the next few verses.

The next part is, “5. Then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Wow. That’s a pretty deep statement. It seems to me that this sentence essentially defines wisdom as the knowledge of God. He makes known to you what is known to Him. This is how we obtain the gifts in the first part of this chapter. The ones we were crying out for. Insight and understanding. This is why some people can speak into your life things that they shouldn’t know. Because He gave them His knowledge. That sounds really exciting to me. All of these thoughts are immediately reinforced by the next verse, “6. For the Lord gives wisdom. From his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.” This needs little explanation. Simply put, God has all knowledge and understanding, and He gives it to those who pursue Him.

So up to this point we have been told what Wisdom is and how to get it. It is the knowledge of God, and we get it by seeking it whole-heartedly. So what are we missing here? Ahh yes, the Why. Why do I need or want this knowledge of God? Now let’s be honest. Most of those who read this are Christians, and as such I would think it likely that you would want the knowledge of God. So why continue?

Simply wanting something does not inspire someone to pursue it. There must be more. There must be a specific purpose for the desire. Something that will push a person forward when an obstacle arises. God’s Wisdom does not come the lazy. It does not grace those who will not use the knowledge for Him. So you must find your purpose. You must decide how bad you want to be with and serve Him. You can lie to others about it, but not to Him and not to yourself. So take up your sword. Take up your cross and fight. Battle for His name. Do not fear for He will not abandon you. Our God is generous and He offers a benefit for your effort.

“7. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, 8. For he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.”

Interestingly enough people assume that if they do good things, good things will happen to them. They wonder how bad things can happen to all those good people out there who don’t deserve it. Well, it’s time to wake up people. The world is not filled with justice, equality, or, kindness. The enemy lies to us and tries to convince us that the world is just, and people get what they deserve. The enemy wants to you to suffer. He is smart, and he is good at this. He can take everything you believe in and ever so slightly tweak it until you are believing a bold faced lie.

Now, I have to tell you something you might not like. You are not good enough, smart enough, or strong enough to stop him. He is the father of lies (John 8:44) (1 Peter 5:8). That means he is good at it. He has had a lot of practice. You will lose. The only way you can hope to win is to have some Godly assistance. That’s what this verse is giving you. Wisdom will show you what is upright. Wisdom will show you how to walk blameless, and it will teach you to be faithful. When you gain Wisdom, and follow it, God will make good on the promise in this verse. He will be your shield. He will make you successful. He will guide you and guard you until you return home to Him.

This, my friends, is the case for Wisdom. This is why it’s so valuable. It is the knowledge of God, given to you through intense longing, giving you the power to see through the enemy, and thus, shielding you from his deception.

So run toward the Lord. Beg Him to give you wisdom. Read His word until it absorbs into your soul, then spew it back at the enemy and his minions until they cower before His might. Fight for this gift until you can no longer stand, and you will find that He will pick you up and set you higher than you’ve ever stood alone.
