Walking in His Plan

I remember hearing most of my life how I needed to give my life to God. When there was a call, I was on board. It made sense in my head. But then, as I got older I had some plans of my own. Something I have always wanted was to travel. I also enjoy public speaking. (I know, it’s weird.) So when I became an adult and was told that I needed to give my life over to God, I was a little nervous.

What was He going to do with it? I felt like I had some pretty good ideas for it myself. He asked, “How’s that going for you? Everything going according to plan?”

“Well, no, but I’m still working on it.”

“Oh, I see. You know, I have a plan. It’s pretty good plan too.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

“Yeah, but what if we go with your plan, and I don’t get any of the things I want?”

“Well, what if you go through your plan, and get everything you want but still feel empty. Then what?”

“….”

“If we go with my plan, you could still get a lot of the things you want. I have given you desires to do things, and if you go with my plan, I will fulfill those desires.”

“But there are parts of your plan that are not part of my plan.”

“That’s true. I’m thinking big picture, long term.”

“Alright, we’ll go with your plan.”

“100%?”

“100%”

Oh boy, that was a scary step, but I did it. So, you might ask, “Has everything worked out the way you had hoped?” No. It hasn’t. In many ways things have been far more challenging than what I had planned. I mean, who actually plans out difficult, life altering challenges for themselves? But, I can say that I am not disappointed. There are many of those challenges that have yielded amazing things.

God still gives me promises about what He is going to do with my future, and I am excited. There are times when, like Abraham and Sarah, I look at my life and where I am and wonder how God is going to do the things He said He would (Genesis 17:17). But I keep walking in faith that He will keep His promises.

Wherever you are in your life, it is never too late to turn over what you have left to God. He can do a lot in a short period of time. He can do a lot with a person who thinks they are messed up and can’t be helped. We are not too far gone. We are not so far from Him that He can’t fix things. All you need to do is turn around and say, “God, I give it up. My life is yours. Take it. Do something with it. I’m on board.”

“100%?”

“100%”
