The Invention of Sin

FYI. This list is not found in the bible. These things are found in the bible but not in a list. The term "Seven Deadly Sins" what invented by the church. Fun picture though.

“Satan made me do it!” Now, I’ve never actually heard someone say this and be serious, but I think many Christians live as if it’s true. The world was brought down by Satan. He is the inventor of sin. He is the reason life is hard for us and why we must constantly battle temptation. Well, if you are nodding and agreeing right now, I’m afraid I just don’t agree with that line of thought.

Satan didn’t invent sin. It doesn’t say that. Someone correct me if I missed it, But I don’t think so. And you know, just to be sure, I googled it and a lot of people believe that Satan created Sin (invented, started, was the first, etc.) and he is responsible for all the evil in the world. But again, that’s not what I read. Biblword.net has an interesting post on this subject that I liked (Who created Sin?). It says that God didn’t create sin because he wouldn’t create anything evil, but if Satan created it, then wouldn’t it be out of God’s control? That can’t be it either (Genesis 1:1, Isaiah 44:24, Genesis 1:31, James 1:13, Proverbs16:4). The writer suggests that we are asking the wrong question. It’s not who created sin, but rather what is sin. We need to get to the root of it before moving on.

So, here we go. Sin is not the opposite of good. Sin is not evil. Sin is not Satan’s. Here is my personal definition. Sin is taking what God created, all perfect and good, and doing it without him, without thinking of His plan for it.

I know that seems a bit vague, but I think it is the most accurate way to put it. Simply thinking that sin is Evil, or not good, leads us to believe that we can defeat sin by being good. If I don’t do bad things, then I am not sinning. That doesn’t work. If it did then we wouldn’t need a savior. Jesus wouldn’t have had to come save us (Ephesians2:1-10). Notice that God wasn’t upset with Adam and Eve because they did something bad. He was upset because they chose to separate from Him and His will. It’s different. He created them to be with Him. They were friends. He spent time with them. A lot of time. He wasn’t wrathful, He was hurt. He was sad. He knew what their choice meant for them, for Him, and for everything else.

But, they knew Him. They walked with Him. They didn’t become evil, uncontrolled beings the instant they ate the fruit. So, why did it matter then? They were still capable of doing good right? They could just do more good than evil, and I’m sure they did. But, it wasn’t enough. Sin wasn’t the opposite of good, or they would have run from it. They would have seen that it was nothing like God and not followed it. They messed up once with the fruit thing, I bet they were on the look out for that next time. But, the world still fell. Their own son committed murder. How? Why didn’t life teach them the lesson?

Because Sin does everything it can to emulate God. See, sin is not the opposite, it wants to be God. It’s a rebellion. Sin wants to be God, so it’s going to try and do what He does.

So, Adam and Eve tried, no doubt, to be good, but they just couldn’t. Sin was in their hearts now. It told them to do things that looked like what God would do, but was just a touch off. So, they did, having no idea what they were doing. They were simply deceived by what was now a part of them. When they surrendered to Sin it took hold, and never let go.

In the end, we have to realize that we are not capable of being good all the time. It can’t be done. Nature doesn’t allow it. We have fallen to sin. Everything we do, that God created, is full of Sin now. So, no matter how much we try, we Sin.

Adam and Eve did not eat meat, but now we do. Do you really think that God intended for us to eat his creations? To spill their blood, cook their flesh, and eat it? I don’t think so. But, we do. It’s our nature now. Our bodies need the protein to survive. Sin created a need in our very flesh that we can’t overcome.

Adam and Eve didn’t have waste either, but we have toilets in our homes to deal with that problem. Their bodies used everything that they ate. Every last drop was perfect. Now, well Sin. Imperfections.

The simple fact is, when they ate the knowledge of good and evil, that’s what they got. They were given knowledge of things that were not of God. They knew that things could be done a way that wasn’t his. So, they had to leave. They couldn’t stay. People think that God was punishing them because they disobeyed, but He wasn’t. They had to leave because the Tree of Life was there. It gave them eternal life. God knew, as he usually does, that if they lived forever with their new knowledge, they would become completely consumed by it. That’s what happed to the demons. They chose to separate from God’s will. They live forever and have become completely consumed and ruled by that corruption. He knew that would be our fate, so he stopped it. He made it so our bodies would die, to end the corruption.

So, I agree with the Blogger above, to an extent. Did we create Sin? No, it wasn’t created, it is a deviation and corruption of the Will of God. But, we do feed, grow, and submit to our own Sin. We are responsible for this, Not Satan. Yes, he does have demons that attack us, and possess people. But, to blame them for every temptation and everything that owns us, is not dealing with the problem.

Sin is in you. It is part of our nature as humans. It will always be there knocking at the door, asking you to try things your own way. “Get it now”, “don’t wait”, “This feels better”, Etc. But, being a sinner…that is not certain. That is not inevitable. Jesus died and gave us the power to shed the mantle of “Sinner” in exchange for, “son of God”. Sin will still be there, but it doesn’t’ have to own us. Each Spirit can be beaten down, uprooted, and caged. We can master them. (Check out this blog from world changers)

And so, dear friends, this is the first step. We must understand that Sin is a part of us. We must fight it there, in ourselves. We will never be free, never be able to fight without first understanding what we are fighting. This is just the beginning. Stay with us as we explore this topic in the series "The War for the Heart". Join with me in taking back our lives from Sin. Jesus gave us the power to do it. We have to get up and do it.
